Why we made it this way
We could have made a cheaper magnesium. Oxide carries more mineral per milligram than any other common form, costs a fraction of a chelate, and would have let us print a larger number on the front of a smaller capsule.
We chose bisglycinate and accepted what that costs. Binding magnesium to glycine produces a heavy compound: most of each capsule is the carrier, and 77mg of it is magnesium. That means more capsules and a higher price per milligram of mineral than a simple salt. We think it's the right trade, and the people who've given up on other magnesium supplements tend to agree.
Then we left everything else out.
Bisglycinate and glycinate are the same thing
If you came looking for magnesium glycinate, you've found it.
Bisglycinate is the precise name — bis for the two glycine molecules bound to each magnesium ion. Glycinate is the shorthand most of the market uses. You'll also see magnesium diglycinate, magnesium bisglycinate chelate and magnesium glycine chelate. One compound, several names.
About glycine
Glycine is the smallest of the twenty amino acids and a normal part of the protein in everyday food. In a chelate it does a specific job: two glycine molecules fold around each magnesium ion and hold it inside an organic structure, rather than pairing it with an inorganic salt such as an oxide or a carbonate.
Magnesium is a reactive metal and never appears alone in a supplement. It always arrives bound to something. What it's bound to is the single biggest difference between two magnesium products sitting side by side.
How to read a magnesium label
The large figure on the front of a magnesium jar is usually the compound, not the mineral. A 700mg claim and a 77mg claim can describe the same capsule — one is the whole chelate, the other is the magnesium inside it.
Only two numbers let you compare products honestly: elemental magnesium and %RI. Ours are 77mg per capsule, 41% RI at two capsules, 61.6% at three.
Pure Fill
Pure Fill is our manufacturing standard: no excipients, no fillers, no flow agents, no anti-caking agents.
Those ingredients exist for the factory, not for you. A flow agent stops powder sticking to machinery during encapsulation; a bulking agent fills space when the active dose is small. They make production easier and cheaper. Our capsules contain magnesium bisglycinate and a plant-derived shell. That's the whole list.
What magnesium contributes to
Magnesium is involved in a very large number of enzymatic processes — the figure usually quoted is over 300. Specifically, and as authorised claims, magnesium contributes to:
- a reduction of tiredness and fatigue
- normal muscle function
- the normal functioning of the nervous system
- normal psychological function
- electrolyte balance
- normal energy-yielding metabolism
- normal protein synthesis
- the maintenance of normal bones and teeth
- the process of cell division
How to take it
Two to three capsules daily.
-
2 capsules — 154mg magnesium, 41% of the daily Reference Intake
-
3 capsules — 231mg magnesium, 61.6% of the daily Reference Intake
Magnesium can have a laxative effect at higher intakes. If you're moving from two capsules to three, build up gradually and take account of any other magnesium you're getting from a multivitamin or other supplement.
Questions
Is magnesium bisglycinate the same as magnesium glycinate?
Yes. Identical compound, two names.
Why only 77mg of magnesium per capsule?
Because the rest of the capsule is glycine — the carrier the magnesium is chelated to. Every chelated mineral works this way.
Why not use magnesium oxide instead?
Oxide delivers more magnesium per milligram of compound and costs less. It's also the form people most often report not getting on with. We went the other way.
Two capsules or three?
Two is the standard serving and already makes this high in magnesium. Three takes you to 61.6% RI. Start at two.
What does Pure Fill mean?
No excipients, fillers or additives. Only what's meant to be in the capsule.
How long does a jar last?
90 capsules — 45 days at two a day, 30 days at three.
Ingredients
Magnesium bisglycinate. Capsule shell: HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose).

¹ Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to electrolyte balance, to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to the normal functioning of the nervous system, to normal muscle function, to normal protein synthesis, to normal psychological function, and to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. It also has a role in the process of cell division.
