The decision behind the dose
Most L-theanine on the market is sold at 100mg or 150mg a capsule, and the number printed on the front of the jar is often the total across two or three of them. It's a reasonable commercial choice: smaller capsules are cheaper to fill and a jar lasts less time.
We put 200mg in one capsule. It means a bigger capsule and a shorter-lived jar, and it means the figure on our label is the figure you take.
What L-theanine is
L-theanine is an amino acid, but not the kind found in food protein. It's a non-protein amino acid — your body doesn't use it as a building block the way it uses the amino acids in eggs, meat or pulses.
It's also unusual in where it occurs. Almost the entire natural supply comes from one plant: Camellia sinensis, the tea bush. Outside of tea there's essentially no dietary source, which is the reason it's taken as a supplement rather than eaten. A cup of brewed green tea carries a small fraction of what's in one of these capsules, and the amount varies considerably with the leaf grade and how long it's steeped.
Ours is extracted from green tea and nothing is added to it. The extract carries no caffeine.
Why we use pullulan
Most capsule shells are gelatine or HPMC. We use pullulan, which costs more than either.
Pullulan is a polysaccharide produced by fermentation — grown, not synthesised, and containing no animal material of any kind. It suits vegans without qualification. It's also a notably dense film with low oxygen permeability, which is a useful property in a shell holding a single pure ingredient with nothing else in the capsule to protect it.
It's a small detail on an ingredient list of two lines. We think small details are most of what separates one supplement from another.
Pure Fill
Pure Fill is our manufacturing standard: no excipients, no fillers, no flow agents, no anti-caking agents.
Open most capsules and the active ingredient shares space with magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide or rice flour. These stop powder sticking to machinery and fill the gap when the active dose is small — they serve the production line, not you. This jar contains L-theanine and a pullulan shell. That's the complete list.
What we can tell you
Health claims on food supplements can only be made where they appear on the UK authorised register. There are no authorised health claims for L-theanine, so you won't find any on this page.
What we can give you instead is complete transparency: exactly what is in the capsule, at exactly what dose, from exactly what source. That is the standard we hold ourselves to across the range, and it is the same thinking behind Pure Fill.
How to take it
One capsule daily, with or without food. There's no requirement to take it at a particular time.
Thirty capsules is a one-month supply at one a day.
Questions
How much L-theanine is in a cup of green tea?
Considerably less than a capsule, and it varies with the leaf and the brew. Matching 200mg by drinking tea would also mean a great deal of caffeine.
Does this contain caffeine?
No. It's L-theanine extracted from green tea, not green tea itself.
Is pullulan vegan?
Yes. It's produced by fermentation and contains no animal material. Gelatine capsules are not suitable for vegans; ours are.
Why is it one capsule rather than two?
Because we put the whole 200mg in one. Check any product you're comparing — the headline figure is often spread across two or three capsules.
With food or without?
Either. It makes no difference.
What's actually in the capsule besides L-theanine?
Nothing. That's what Pure Fill means.
