Why we built it this way
There is no shortage of single-ingredient ashwagandha on the market, and we already make one. Mega Blend exists because we wanted to answer a different question: if someone is building a shelf of supplements around ashwagandha, what are they buying alongside it, and could it be one jar instead of four?
The answer turned out to be three more botanicals and two minerals. Six things in a capsule that holds nothing else.
Four plants, four traditions
The botanicals in this formula come from different places and different herbal histories. They ended up together because of what they are, not where they're from.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) — a root with centuries of use in Ayurvedic practice in India. Holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum) — tulsi, also Indian, a relative of the basil in your kitchen but a distinct species with its own long tradition. Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) — Wu Wei Zi in Chinese, the "five-flavour berry", named for carrying sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent notes at once. Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) — a cold-climate flowering plant from the mountains of Scandinavia and Siberia, with a use history in Russia and northern Europe rather than Asia.
Why KSM-66®, specifically
"Ashwagandha extract" on an ingredient list tells you almost nothing. It doesn't tell you which part of the plant, or how it was extracted.
Both matter. Ashwagandha root and ashwagandha leaf are different material with different composition, and leaf is cheaper to work with. Extraction method varies just as widely — alcohol and chemical solvents are common, and faster.
KSM-66® is a branded extract that specifies both: root only, and produced without alcohol or chemical solvents. It also holds a consistent specification batch to batch, which a generic extract doesn't guarantee. We use 228mg per two-capsule serving and we name it on the label, because a branded extract is only worth paying for if you can see it.
Why the minerals are at these levels
This is the part most blends get wrong, and it's deliberate here.
A supplement can only make a claim about a nutrient if it contains at least 15% of the Reference Intake per serving. Below that, the nutrient is on the ingredient list but legally silent — decoration. Plenty of botanical blends include a token amount of a mineral for exactly that reason: it reads well and costs almost nothing.
We went past that threshold and past the next one. 30% RI is the level at which a product can be described as high in a nutrient. Mega Blend delivers 120mg of magnesium — 32% — and 10mg of zinc, which is 100% of the daily Reference Intake. Both minerals do real work in this formula and both are declared at levels that let us say so.
Pure Fill
Pure Fill is our manufacturing standard: no excipients, no fillers, no flow agents, no anti-caking agents.
Those things exist to make encapsulation cheaper and faster — they're for the production line, not the person taking the capsule. Six ingredients and a plant-derived shell is the entire contents of this jar.
What magnesium and zinc contribute to
As authorised claims:
Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to the normal functioning of the nervous system, to normal psychological function, to electrolyte balance, to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to normal muscle function, and to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.
Zinc contributes to normal cognitive function, to the normal function of the immune system, to the protection of cells from oxidative stress, to normal DNA synthesis, and to the maintenance of normal hair, skin and nails.
How to take it
Two capsules daily, with food. That's the full serving — the figures on this page are all per two capsules.
Sixty capsules is a 30-day supply.
Questions
Why do people call these plants adaptogens?
It's a term from herbal tradition used to group plants with a particular history of use. It isn't an authorised health claim in the UK, so we don't build claims on it. The claims on this page are the magnesium and zinc ones, and they're footnoted below so you can see exactly which nutrient carries which.
What does KSM-66® mean?
A branded ashwagandha extract with a fixed specification: root only, no alcohol or chemical solvents, consistent batch to batch. It's not a synonym for ashwagandha.
Root or leaf — does it matter?
They're different material with different composition. Extracts made from one aren't interchangeable with the other. Ours is root only.
Why is there zinc in an ashwagandha product?
Because at 10mg it's doing something the botanicals can't — carrying authorised claims for cognitive function, immune function and protection of cells from oxidative stress. At a token dose it would just be a word on the label.
How does this compare to your standard Ashwagandha?
The standard product is single-ingredient KSM-66®. This is the same extract plus rhodiola, schisandra, holy basil, magnesium and zinc. If you want ashwagandha on its own, buy that one.
Can I take it alongside a multivitamin?
Check the labels. This provides 100% of the Reference Intake for zinc, so it's worth knowing what else you're taking before you add it.
