Spotlight on Irish Botanica Mushrooms

Mushrooms have been used for thousands of years in medicine. Here we put the spotlight on 5 medicinal mushrooms

Medicinal mushrooms are associated with numerous alternative therapies as employed by ancient Chinese medicine.

Of course, not all mushrooms are safe and it’s important to thoroughly research any and all wild mushrooms before consumption.

Keep reading for a full breakdown of some of the best medicinal mushrooms out there, that can be found in the Irish Botanica range of supplements.

Lion's Mane

Lion’s Mane has played a part in East Asian medicine for decades, and is used by locals for a variety of reasons

A fascinating looking mushroom with its tendril-like appearance, Lion’s Mane is  widely available as a capsule, powder, or liquid - with a recommended usage typically being 1g every day for around two weeks. Lion’s Mane is an all-rounder on the mushroom market and has been picked up by the Western world as an effective example of ancient Chinese medicine in practice.

    Cordyceps

Cordyceps was discovered back in 1753 and has played a role in natural supplements ever since.

Characterised by its red and orange colouring and its strange, tubular structure, this mushroom, Cordyceps can be found across Europe and other northern hemisphere regions.

      Chaga

Chaga is a mushroom of Asian origin which has long been used in Eastern medicine and also as a nutritional supplement.

While there are no known or definitive side effects of Chaga, it can react with other medication so care should be taken during consumption.

One of the ways in which the Chaga mushroom is characterised is from the fact it grows on the side of trees.

      Maitake

Maitake is characterised by its frilly-edged layering when found in the wild.

In Japan, Maitake is known as the dancing mushroom because when people found it in the wild, they would dance with happiness – giving you some early indication about its reputation as a special mushroom

      Reishi

Originating from Asia, the Reishi mushroom is available in a range of formats from powders to capsules and liquid supplements. It is recognisable for its strange shape and deep colour, with a rounded edge which makes it look like an ear.
