Everything You Need to Know About Oils and Omegas

Chances are, you’ll have heard about the importance of oils and omegas, but you might not know the full extent of the role they play in our health. Thankfully, we’ve got you covered with everything you’ll need to know about oils and omegas in this guide.

The information provided here in part is from Udo Erasmus himself, from his website https://udoerasmus.com/oil-basics/

Our bodies are incapable of producing omega fatty acids, which means it is essential to obtain them from external food sources. There are three main types of omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA are primarily found in fish, whereas ALA is found in plant sources such as nuts and seeds. People often choose to get their intakes of omega fatty acids through oils, as it’s easy to consume as part of your daily diet.

But why take oils that contain omega fatty acids? Every cell needs omega fatty acids, and they are only available from a few food sources. It’s reported that over 90% of the population gets less than they need for optimum health. With it being one of the most common deficiencies, you need to take extra care to ensure omega fatty acids are being consumed regularly.

What Are the Benefits of Omega Fatty Acids?

As previously mentioned, omega fatty acids are essential to consume as our bodies can’t naturally produce them. However, omegas fatty acids, in particular – omega-3, have numerous reported health benefits, meaning increasing your intake can only be a positive.

Omega-3 has been found to play a significant role in increasing metabolism, energy production and keeping warm – which is why many people who live in colder conditions or are sensitive to cold weather have found omega-3 to be beneficial for them.

Other key health benefits of omega-3 include improving brain health and eye development, combatting inflammation, improving cardiovascular health, and lowering blood pressure. Because of the impact on different areas of health, omega-3 consumption is essential for everyone, and not getting enough can leave you more exposed to a variety of problems.

Omega-3 has also been linked with weight management. A combination of increasing your omega-3 intake and eating fewer carbs can help assist you if you are trying to lose weight. Of course, omega-3 alone can’t cause weight loss, you’d need to be in a calorie deficit, however, if you lower your carb intake and exercise properly, omega-3 could help promote fat burning.

Different Types of Oils

Udo’s Choice Ultimate Oil Blend

Udo’s Choice Ultimate Oil contains omegas 3,6 and 9, not only that, it’s in the ideal ratio to support optimum health. What is the ideal ratio of Omega 3 to 6? If you are healthy, any omega 3 to omega 6 ratio between 2:1 and 1:4 will work. If you are not healthy, the most effective ratio in my experience is 2:1.

Omega 3, 6 & 9 are essential nutrients, and healthy oils such as Udo’s should be a staple of everyone’s diet. The optimum oil intake varies from person to person, however, a dosage of one tablespoon per 25kg of body weight per day is recommended. Udo’s oil is entirely plant based and can be added to a variety of meals, so it’s easy enough to include as part of your daily diet. Think of Udo’s Oil as a ‘foundation food’ rather than a supplement.

If you’re new to using the oil as a foundation food, it may take your body a little time to get used to it. If you take more at any one time than your liver can handle, it lets you know by making you feel tired, heavy or nauseous. If that happens to you, lower your intake and take 1-6 months to gradually increase your liver capacity to dealing with oils.

Fish Oil

Oily fish are known for being the richest source of omega fatty acids, and many people choose to take fish oil to get their daily dose. However, there are concerns that some fish oils may contain some toxic molecules from their production process. Because of these concerns, some people choose to look for alternative oils.

Krill Oil

Often used as an alternative to fish oil, krill oil has several beneficial properties which make it an ideal addition to your ‘foundation food’ oil. Krill is lower down on the food chain, so the oil naturally contains fewer toxins when compared to fish oil. It also contains a powerful antioxidant known as astaxanthin and can help combat inflammation. However, krill oil on its own may not contain enough of the nutrients required to get your recommended oil foundation.

Some oils are usually associated with being fattening and unhealthy, however, certain oils can be necessary to maintain an optimum level of health. Omega fatty acids can provide you with a plethora of health benefits and it’s vital to include them in your diet, so it makes perfect sense to use healthy oils that contain omegas.
